Reviews: By SEAN ELLIOTT, IFMagazine Senior Editor Well three cheers for false advertising. NBC had been promoting this week’s BIONIC WOMAN as if Jaime had to outrace a bullet to save someone she loved. Instead she was actually protecting a South African leader who rules through torture and terror. Of course there was one fatality at the end of a bullet, in terms of someone that Jaime cares about, and that person was Antonio Pope (Isaiah Washington). When his character hit the ground after being shot you could hear the sound of every gay fan of the show thrusting a fist into the air.
I’m glad that Washington is finally off of BIONIC WOMAN. He didn’t need to be back on network TV quite so soon after his repeated hatemonger epithets that he uttered left, right, and center within earshot of more civilized people. I’m not sure whose brain abortion was responsible for his casting, but he added nothing to the series, besides a bad taste for some of us who only consider him to be a bigot. Which leads me to the fact, that if you are trying to get your viewers to be sad about the death of a character, you should chose someone who will actually engender feelings of sympathy and not victory over the fact that they are dead…but enough on that subject…my rant is over and now I can enjoy what is left of this series in peace.
This episode had some really nice play between Jaime, her sister, and Jaime’s new boyfriend CIA agent Tom. I’m really developing a fondness for these characters and I am more than just a little eager to see how long both Jaime and now Tom can keep up the guise of not being special agents for the government in front of Jaime’s sister.
This was mainly an episode about killing off one specific character, so not a whole hell of a lot happened otherwise. From what I’ve been told there may only be one or two more episodes of BIONIC WOMAN left that were finished before the writers’ strike in Hollywood, so it is anybody’s guess as to where we go from here. B FAN REVIEW The Berkut Group are assigned to protect a visiting African dictator from a potential assassin but could the killer be close to home? This is one of the strongest episodes yet with compelling performances from both Michelle Ryan and Isaiah Washington and a twisting, turning script by Kerry Ehrin that keeps the viewers guessing till the very end. Both Pope and Jaime's CIA boyfriend fall under suspicion during the course of the story, and the resolution, while not exactly original, is effective and allows Jaime the chance to grow as a character. Tom comes across better than in previous episodes thanks to a bittersweet dinner date with Jaime and Becca, It's a little lazy of the writers though to try and suggest Tom might be untrustworthy for a second time in three episodes, it seems as if they are struggling to come up with new ideas. In the same scenes Lucy Kate Hale proves that Becca can be a great addition to the cast when the writers aren't going out of their way to make her a moody teenager. The rest of the regular cast are a little overlooked this week unfortunately although there is a rather cute scene where Ruth buys a pot plant for her office after a conversation with Jaime. It's an interesting metaphor for the effect that Jaime seems to be having on the Berkut group as a whole, giving new life to their rather stark, military lives. This episode can also boast one of the best stunt/ effects sequences yet, with a superb pre-credits showdown between Jaime and a moving car. 4/5
